Special thanks to NASCA for providing me the opportunity to hang out as an ARMTour Ambassador with the Ntaria community in Hermannsburg, Central Australia. Special thanks to the Ntaria community for sharing your world and inspiring us how live.

This quote is dedicated to the people who live there and all the people who work for NASCA. ‎”Certainly you can inspire others with your words. Yet you can inspire other people even more with the way you live. By skilfully arguing and presenting your beliefs, you can convince others to consider adopting those beliefs. Yet you can express those beliefs even more convincingly by consistently applying them to your life. With what you say, you can get some attention. With what you do, again and again, you can build real and lasting credibility. If you wish to lift others up, the first step is to bring your own life to a higher level. Then you can bring along as many other people as you wish. It’s not selfish to follow your own authentic dreams and to create a life for yourself that’s the best you can imagine. For in doing so, you also create outstanding opportunities along the way to be of real, meaningful service to others. Your life has unique and immense value. Share that value far and wide by living your dreams and making your life a true inspiration” Unknown.

I am a fellow adventurer, but have to live vicariously through you as have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and have chronic pain now. I miss my days of travel so much. Loved seeing the world through your eyes mate. I know the freedom of which you speak when you are out there alone, going for it. I hope I get out there again some day!”

I tuned in halfway through and I just really got everything you were saying, like this dude is me in 7 or 8 years on crack. The stuff about connecting with people and being like a mobile councilor because you both know your not going to be there tomorrow and the honesty that two strangers share is something I really understand. Needless to say I bought your book when I got to Adelaide and loved the shit out of your stories.

I have travelled to many places myself and spent many a night in a hostel taking everything in & meeting people from all walks of life. I will pass your book on to my 18YR old daughter & hope that she gets inspired and spreads her wings. Steve Crombie is a futuristic adventurer. There are no plumes of feathers protruding out of a velveteen hat, no sign of a khaki clad body and not a pair of brass binoculars in hand; it’s just Steve and his motorbike.

LOST ON EARTH is his personal account of his epic 90,000km ride from Australia to the Arctic Circle. The journey takes him 2 years and within those 2 years he suffers from dehydration, starvation, disease and rebuilds his beloved motorbike ‘Wolverine’ 5 times over. At the beginning of his journey he declares to himself that the only way he is going home is by bike or by box.

Throughout the book, Steve has the ability to absorb you into his ride and when you can actually pull yourself away from it, you’re left with a zest that makes you want to bury your head back in the pages and carry on along with his adventure. I didn’t want to finish the book because then the adventure would be over.

There’s one particular passage in the book which I adore, where he meets a particularly extraordinary man who passes on these words to him ‘…Why stop? Whatever makes you happy. All your long and lonely days on the road are going to teach you more about life than any university. There’s no reason to feel guilty doing something you love. The best way to learn how or why you’re doing something is by actually doing it. You might not know what you’re working towards yet, but these experiences will shape your life. You might struggle at first, but eventually you’ll get the hang of it. You’ll work it out. Use your imagination to feed your hunger if you can’t afford it – and when the time’s right again, hit the road. But don’t rush; you’ve got a whole lifetime ahead of you’. From riding past delicious sunflower fields speckled in golden sunshine to resorting to licking bugs off the front guard of his bike to sustain his starving stomach to interacting with peculiar and beautiful characters along the road. His journey is saturated with epic highs and lows which ultimately become the fuel to light Steve’s thirst to continue.

My Dad picked up the book, mentally and emotionally devouring it within two days and is still rambling on to anybody who will listen as if it were he himself that rode 90,000km on a motorbike. Even if you aren’t the adventuring kind, this book makes it possible for you to experience the life of a man who dreamt of something and threw himself out into the world to pursue and live it. Maybe in turn rousing you to take your own steps towards that dream [whatever it may be] that’s always lingered in the back of your mind. Or maybe you can be refreshed by the fact that there are still adventurers in this world, which continue to chase the horizon and who relish in the calm and chaos of this amazing world.

Or maybe you should just read LOST ON EARTH because I’m a damn fine literary hooker. Either ways read LOST ON EARTH and remember that ‘Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all’.

Mr Crombie, you totally changed my life and i really just want to say thankyou. YOU are living MY dream, except that i never really knew it was my dream and i certainly never knew it was possible to make it into a reality. When you showed up in your book and documentaries… well, something ignited in me and it hit me like a thunderbolt.

I never knew that there were people out there doing it, i thought it was just my wild imagination causing so much conflict within because i was always wanting to be somewhere else, doing something extreeeeemely exciting and dangerous to make me feel as though i was really, truly alive and making the absolute most of my time on this magnificently mindblowing planet. From that moment i had no option but to persue my lifelong dream that had been skulking lazily on the sidelines of my mind and in my heart, just waiting to be brought to life.
I love all the lesson’s life brings and the people that bring them to you, especially you. You’ve played an important part in my life, you made me think differently and act upon those thoughts to bring me to where i am today, which is a far far better place.
So, now i live my life safe in the knowledge that if i get flattened, at least i have let you know that you’re still the most inspiring person i have ever met.
From a tropically balmy summer’s night in Byron, i send love and thanks. Dreams can come true can’t they?

“For all of those who never set foot out in to the world and ended up in a small town with no great tales to tell, meet Steve Crombie. The pull quote on the back of the book says it all: ‘The only way I am coming home is by bike or in a box.’ One man’s dream of traversing this great planet by motorbike and all the obstacles he has to overcome is consolidated into this great adventure novel. Displaying all the carefree nature of a typical Australian, Steve Crombie plops himself onto Honda650 dirt bike and starts his 90’000 kilometre journey in South America. It will take him two years but his final goal is to ride to the Arctic Circle come hell or high-water and he gets both in huge doses. Ride along with this brave adventurer as he proves he is not even close to being a professional by forgetting a tire pump in the beginning of the journey! He is beaten down by weather, pushes though sleep deprived days in the saddle and has constant motorbike issues, Crombie and his never-give-up attitude soak in the sights, sounds and smells of this, our Gods great earth. Traversing in and out of both good and evil this book will keep you guessing as to the outcome of his quest. Come along as he hangs out with coke dealers in Venezuela while fixing his bike; wakes up in jail in Tierra Del Fuego and runs on empty in lush rain forests, Steve Crombie will not fail. Live though his anguish, joy, curiosity and the constant roll-with –the-punches attitude.

You might not go out and buy a bike and a map but if you do you will have taken the first step to a lifestyle drenched in freedom.

“I couldn’t put this book down! Admittedly, I’ve known Crombie for years and was hoping his literary labour of love would entertain me in the same way the man himself does over a few beers. And that it exactly what it does! Lost On Earth is one of the most honest and inspiring books I’ve ever read. It makes you feel like you’re part of the adventure, grabbing life by the balls and milking every granule of juice out of every experience, as Crombie and his trusty “Wolverine” travel through some pesky situations in both South and North America over the course of two years. So go buy this book. That way, Crombie can get off the breadline and shout me that beer he’s been promising for years! “
Probably the best moto-adventure book ever written. Steve relates some of the amusing and terrifying anecdotes – yes, anecdotes – from his time covering 90,000km on his unstoppable Honda Dominator, Wolverine, which he rebuilds four times during the two-year odyssey. He kicks off on Easter Island with a couple of mates and proceeds to do a little jail time, follow the Amazon, dodge pumas, associate with undesirables (aside from adventure riders) and makes his way through the Arctic. It’s a frigging rollicking story, and Steve’s optimism shines from every page… which is just as well, considering some of the shit he had to cope with. “

Andy Wigan – Editor of Transmoto Magazine

While a steady trickle ofhermanos have completed the Pan American traverse, (Tim Cahill in Road Feverfamously took a mere 23 days), Crombie does his utmost to avoid the route-more-travelled and takes the reader on a trip through the obscurer slices of Latin America.

Crombie is always entertaining and his passion (and ability – he speaks both Spanish and Portuguese) to converse with the locals brings a depth to encounters that most adventure travellers only dream of. He’s constantly indebted to the kindness of strangers as he single-mindedly flogs both body and machine relentlessly towards his goal. And the closer he gets, the more questions he asks, the more he reveals of himself and his motivation.
